After cleaning out the pumpkin, a pattern is taped to the front of it. The BLACK areas will be cut away entirely. The white areas will be left intact. The grey areas are where the hard orange outer shell will be cut/shaved away, leaving the yellowish flesh exposed below. A candle or other light will glow through the flesh translucently. Note the itty bitty holes punched along the lines here... I used a T pin to do punch the holes, which essentially transfers the patterns to the pumpkin's outer skin.
